End-to-End Bus Fleet Electrification Solution
Cost and complexity are key barriers in the way of a faster transition from diesel to battery electric buses for public transport agencies in NY. Several factors influence the design, cost and performance of ebus fleets including routes, weather, charging strategy and infrastructure constraints. A significant increase in load on the local electrical network often triggers substantial upgrades to the electrical infrastructure at the facility and the utility-grid level.
Enel X and its partners will provide holistic planning and real-time controls/optimization solution leveraging software platforms that co-optimize the energy and transportation system through Charging Strategy Analysis, Managed Charging, Fleet Management, Vehicle-Grid-Integration and Smart eBus Depot designs which include energy efficiency, load flexibility, and Distributed Energy Resources (DER)/microgrids. Enel X integrates these services into a modular financing solution which includes performance guarantees. The solution is enhanced by Enel X's ability to garner market revenues through demand response (DR) and grid services in New York Independent System Operator (NYISO) and utility programs.
Our scalable solution will accelerate electrification by employing innovative financing models such as eBus-as-Service, Charging-as-a-Service, Battery-as-a-Service, and/or Energy-as-a-Service to fill the funding gap for CAPEX-heavy infrastructure upgrades. We will also reduce technology/integration risks through performance guarantees that ensure that levels of service are maintained or enhanced while maximizing cost savings and environmental benefits.
We will control charging and grid-integration costs by leveraging our smart/managed charging platform and vehicle-grid integration (VGI) solutions which have been recognized as the #1 ranked VGI solution (according to Navigant). Furthermore, by jointly modeling and optimizing both the transportation and energy system during the detailed planning phase, we will further reduce grid upgrade and ongoing electricity costs by optimizing the charging schedule. Where possible, we will integrate distributed generation/storage or microgrids to further reduce electricity costs, improve resilience, increase renewable penetration and provide grid benefits.
RMI's data science, telematics and GIS approaches coupled with MGLs charging process simulation/optimization will bridge system planning around buses (routes, frequency, ridership) and managed charging (capacity, timing, and bus schedule) to increase bus operators' confidence in the overall solution.
Success means reducing the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO), environmental/health impacts and risks/uncertainties while improving quality of life for disadvantaged communities.
Bus fleet electrification inherently improves quality of life for the riders and surrounding communities by significantly contributing to local health and global climate change mitigation. To further enhance quality of life, EnelX also integrates additional Smart City solutions within its turn-key solution, e.g. City Analytics, Smart Bus Stops, and Digital Ticketing.
